Pulau Pasir is a small sandbank island that appears during low tide, creating a beautiful stretch of white sand surrounded by clear turquoise waters. It is a peaceful spot perfect for photography, quick stops during island-hopping trips, and enjoying the natural beauty of Langkawi’s coastline. Because the island is tide-dependent, visitors can only access it at certain times, making it one of Langkawi’s unique and fleeting natural attractions.


The Underwater Sculpture Park at Kubang Badak brings together art, mythology, and marine conservation. Created by a group of Malaysian sculptors, these large-scale artworks are submerged to become part of the seabed, where they slowly transform into artificial reefs. Each sculpture is inspired by Langkawi’s legends from the clash of Mat Cincang and Mat Raya, to the mythical Archelon turtle, to the enduring tale of Mahsuri.

Tanjung Buta Geosite is a rocky coastal area with features like sea caves, erosion platforms, and small sandy or pebble beaches. The cliffs and rock surfaces here also show signs of natural processes, including layers of iron deposits and quartz formed over thousands of years.


This area contains many pieces of quartz scattered along the rocks and beaches. It is also an important site where a 500-million-year-old trilobite fossil from the Saukiidae family was discovered, offering a rare glimpse into Langkawi’s ancient past.

The limestone found in the Kubang Badak area is known as the Setul Formation and is about 490 million years old. It is one of the ancient rocks that helped shape Langkawi’s islands. This type of limestone was formed long ago at the bottom of shallow seas and today creates hills with steep cliffs, rugged surfaces, and sharp peaks.
Geologists consider the Setul Formation the second oldest rock in Malaysia, just younger than the 550-million-year-old rocks of Mount Machinchang located to the west of Langkawi.


Pinang Cave was shaped by waves around 6,000 years ago when the sea level was about 15 metres higher. Oyster and cockle shells on the walls show where the ancient shoreline once reached. Today, the cave is home to unique wildlife adapted to darkness, including insects, crabs, geckos, and even a bat-eating cave racer snake, all supported by the rich bat guano on the cave floor.

The top layer of soil and sand helps keep the surface water here cooler, usually below 40°C. The hot water in this area becomes salty because seawater seeps down through cracks in the limestone, gets heated underground, and then rises back up to the surface as warm, mineral-rich water.


In Langkawi, the hot springs are linked to the Kisap Fault, a major crack in the earth caused by shifting tectonic plates. This fault creates openings in the ground where surface water and groundwater can seep deep inside, get heated by hot rocks or magma below, and then rise back up to the surface as warm spring water.

When tides are large and the coastline is gentle, waves lose their energy before reaching the shore, allowing sand and fine mud to settle. This creates sandy beaches at mid-tide and wide mudflats closer inland, which eventually become colonised by mangrove trees whose roots trap more sediment. Sand carried by waves and currents can also build long, narrow sandbars that may be fully submerged at high tide but gradually stabilise over time, allowing plants to grow on them.

Menora Hill is a type of mogote, a geological term for an isolated hill with steep slopes formed by either limestone (high in calcium carbonate minerals), marble or dolomite.


One of the entertainment events was the Menora theatre that originated from southern Thai, which can also be seen in the northern and eastern parts of Peninsular Malaysia. Menora is a type of dance-drama, such as Mak Yong and Mek Mulung.

Pulau Jemuruk is a remnant island made up of some of the oldest rocks in Langkawi. The exposed rocks here belong to the upper layers of the Machinchang Formation, located near the boundary where it meets the Setul Formation to the south and east.


Fossils discovered on Pulau Jemuruk include trilobites, ancient marine creatures from the Cambrian period about 550 million years ago. Their presence makes this island a valuable site for understanding the earliest chapters of Langkawi’s geological history.

The Siam River area in Kubang Badak was an early settlement of Southern Thai migrants who arrived in the 18th century. For generations, their main livelihood centred on three key activities: charcoal making, rice cultivation, and rubber planting.


The Siam River plays a crucial role in the traditional charcoal industry. During high tide, workers use the rising water to transport logs by boat into the kiln area and later send the finished charcoal out for export. When the tide goes out, factory workers take the opportunity to cut and prepare new logs. This careful rhythm of high-tide transport and low-tide harvesting is managed responsibly to ensure that only a controlled number of trees are taken, protecting the surrounding mangrove ecosystem and the wildlife that depends on it.

The fishing jetty at Kubang Badak Village serves as the main landing site for local fishermen, reflecting the village’s long-standing identity as a traditional fishing community.

This community-run oyster farm showcases sustainable aquaculture, where oysters grow naturally in the clean mangrove waterways. Thanks to the excellent water quality, many molluscs such as oysters, clams and mussels also thrive here alongside the oysters.


The farm also promotes a true zero-kilometre gastronomy experience, where oysters go directly from farm to table at their freshest. The risk of eating oysters here is low because the farmers carry out careful protein skimming and detoxification processes that remove unwanted algae, keeping the oysters clean and safe to enjoy.


The community is also exploring new initiatives, including breeding sea cucumbers and producing that is a traditional remedy made from oysters that is believed to help with memory-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s. These efforts support ongoing research and aim to expand sustainable aquaculture in the area.

This viewpoint shows three different types of landscapes, each shaped by different natural processes. To the west, the Machinchang Range is made of very old sandstone that is hard and resistant to erosion, which is why the mountain still keeps its original layered shape. To the south, you can see wide mudflats created by calm coastal waters where mud and silt settle, making the area ideal for mangrove forests. To the east, the steep and rugged hills are made of limestone, a rock that dissolves easily and forms caves, cavities, and sharp surfaces. Waves also erode the base of these hills, creating dramatic cliffs.

A species of fungus inspired this work: the button mushroom, which is associated with the myths and legends of Langkawi Island. The myth of Belanga Pecah results from the fight between Mat Cincang
and Mat Raya. During the clash and struggle between the two giants, the jar (belanga) was thrown far away until it fell on Pulau Pasir and was caught on a mushroom. The caught effect then formed an elongated mushroom.

Dr. Zainuddin (Pok Din) has adapted this work from the narration of the famous Mahsuri legend. According to the story, Mahsuri was punished until she emanated white blood after being slandered
for sleeping. Zainuddin depicts the moment of sula punishment by bending each blade of the iron rod to form the body of Mahsuri, who is being executed - an abstract figure of a woman in kebaya fashion is processed as best as possible.

Fuad's artwork is a monument sculpture made of electrical appliances and computer equipment components found around Kubang Badak village. The result of the collected materials was made into a mould and arranged as a monument. The sculpture is a landmark that gives an image and reminds one of old memories. Refrigerators, televisions, irons, computers and bottles are materials close to daily life. Ultimately, this equipment is thrown away when
damaged and no longer used, indirectly affecting pollution and global warming. The reverse archaeology approach is very important in recording everything that is happening now for the future.

Muthalib's sculpture is inspired by the story of the Bermuda Triangle, which is famous for its unique modern myth. The sculptor relates the strange stories to various local myths and legends on Langkawi Island, namely the story of Mahsuri and other fairy tales. community who are saviours and helpers, especially in difficult situations. Mahsuri's symbolism and icons in this work are seen through floats arranged alternately with children's toys. The feminist element in this work is the floral motif produced on some floats and children's toys, symbolising the tenderness of a woman and mother. The topmost component of this sculpture is an eagle of the whitebreasted species, as the eagle is iconic of Langkawi Island itself.

The production of this sculpture is symbolic of the fight between Mat Cincang and Mat Raya. Khuzairie described a great explosion as the fight took place that led to a roar with the impact of an explosion like an atomic bomb. Sang Kelembai was present and interfered in the Mat Cincang and Mat Raya clash. The skeleton of a bull-headed creature on top of this eruption symbolised Sang Kelembai with his magic that cursed Mat Cincang and Mat Raya into stone. The whirlwinds of flying dust turned into bukit bukau, the mountains, and the cluster of Langkawi Islands.

Fiddler crabs are easily recognised by their most striking feature: in males, one of the two front claws grows extremely large. This oversized claw is used for waving to attract females and for defending territory. It is common to see male fiddler crabs engaging in small battles with each other as they compete for mates and control of burrows. Males may even challenge females if the territory includes a valuable burrow the male wants to claim. These behaviours are part of the lively and competitive life of fiddler crabs in the mangrove ecosystem.

Origin of the Name of the Place


According to a folklore, the origin of the name Kg. Kubang Badak is derived from a creature resembling a mighty and powerful rhinoceros that protected the village from harm. There is also the possibility that once upon a time, there were many wallowing buffaloes at the village.
